APRIL
MANTRA

Om Gate,
gate,
paragate,
parasamgate,
bodhi svaha.

Gone, gone,
gone beyond,
gone altogether beyond,
I am awakened,
so it is.

Om Gate
This is a mantra of the heart...directly from the heart sutra...very special!

If these words resonate with you, try repeating this mantra to yourself several times; several times a day all month.

Remember, the word "mantra" literally means "mind protector."

Repeating a mantra is the first step towards training the mind, allowing positive, beneficial thoughts to permeate your being and will, if practiced regularly, truly transform your experience of life!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

 Kathleen Wallace

Meet Kathleen!Kathleen Wallace  Many of you already know our beloved, energetic, bubbly and extremely articulate Kathleen, but for those of you who don't...now's your chance!  Kathleen and her husband, Dick, moved to Hendersonville from Granville, Ohio excited about the warmer weather and beautiful scenery.  They had been looking at homes in the Thermal Belt when they discovered Hendersonville.  They knew it was meant to be when they almost immediately found their beautiful home in Flat Rock.  It's hard to believe that Kathleen just celebrated her three year anniversary at Brightwater Yoga and she is feeling more inspired and motivated than ever!

Kathleen started doing yoga in her 30's because she and Dick were building a house and preparing to move out of their condominium.  She says at the time she needed two things:  (1) something to keep her stable (Yoga!)  and,  (2)  nutrition.  She began taking and distributing Shaklee products.  She informed me that Shaklee is a network marketing company that sells all natural nutritional, cleaning, baby and personal care products.  She still uses and distributes the products today.  During this time, Kathleen was teaching high school English and was the Assistant Theatre Director at the high school as well.  If this wasn't enough, she was also completing her dissertation in Communications (with many hours already completed in Theatre).  Good thing she ate well and did yoga!!!

Prior to this, Kathleen spent two years teaching in the Columbus Public Schools' Arts IMPACT Program as the Drama teacher.  She was working toward her Doctoral Degree for three years during which time she had a Teaching Fellowship and went from teaching college to elementary school to high school.  Intermittently, she worked as a secretary and in retail, even with a stint as Men's Fashion Coordinator, in order to bank money so she could pursue her education which she proudly paid for herself.

Kathleen says that upon taking her first yoga class, she immediately thought "I've done this before...it's like dancing, but in a very different way.  She's always danced and yoga felt familiar so she began each working day with yoga.  When I asked her how she came to teach yoga she explained that it was after she had been diagnosed with stage 0 breast cancer.  She had rejected an offer by her Oncologist to remove both breasts to avoid future problems and had increased the amount of both yoga and dance classes that she previously had been taking.

Fortunately, her yoga teacher in Ohio taught Phoenix Rising  Yoga which Kathleen knew instinctively would help her.  She did six private sessions and a lot of alternative healing which opened up whole new worlds to her.  Kathleen said that as a result she looked and felt better than she'd ever felt before!  "In fact," she giggled, "people at my church started noticing and mentioning how great I looked!"  She says that year she even performed in The Nutcracker (which she performed in consecutively for the next three years!!!)

"It's because of the all the physical stuff I'd been through- notably a hysterectomy, periodontal surgery, and a diagnosis of Pernicious Anemia that I decided to go this alternative route," admitted Kathleen.  When all the ladies at her church asked her what she was doing to look and feel so good she responded simply, "I move my body!"  She says they immediately started asking her to do that for them so she began teaching and offered a four week program of a Liturgically-based combination of dance and yoga.  "I do think there was a strong spiritual element for me in all this," Kathleen sincerely noted.  As the program continued to grow, she decided to seek out Yoga Training and that's when she met Janice George, who trained for years at Kripalu Yoga and taught Integrative Yoga Therapy.  Janice had just opened a studio and began offering a 200/hour certification program which Kathleen participated in and completed.

Kathleen is looking forward to re-connecting with Janice when she visits Ohio this May.  She is planning to take a Teacher Training in Laughing Yoga.  (Who knows, maybe we'll be offering a class in that some day!)  Today, Kathleen is ready to move forward following the unexpected death of her husband in January of 2009.  She continues to teach her weekly classes at Brightwater:  Afternoon Practice on Tuesday from 4:30-6:00 pm and Morning Practice on Wednesday's from 9:30-11:00 am.  In addition, she teaches two weekly classes at Kenmure and two weekly classes at her home studio.  Her home studio is extremely special to her because it is in the space that she and Dick were building to be his woodworking shop.  Kathleen says she enjoys teaching all kinds of students of all ages.  She beautifully incorporates all her life experiences and training into her yoga classes.

In addition to teaching, Kathleen loves to read and work crossword and other kinds of word puzzles.  She still enjoys dance and also takes Pilates.  She is proud to be a Medicare recipient at 65 and still able to "move the body!"  "And I'm looking forward to many more years of moving the body," she gleamed!!!  "It doesn't matter how old you are or the things that have happened to you in your past, you can still find a way to move your body, particularly through yoga!"  What an inspiration!

April's Awesome Asana:

Setu Bandha Sarvangasana
 Setu = Bridge
Bandha = Lock
"Bridge Pose"

Step 1: Lie on your back.  Bend your knees and place your feet on the floor as close to the sitting bones as you can with the toes facing straight ahead and the knees parallel to one another.  Extend your arms down by your sides.

Step 2: On an exhalation draw your tailbone toward your pubic bone, press your feet, upper arms and outer shoulders actively into the floor and lift your pelvis up away from the floor while firming the buttocks and engaging your hamstrings.  Keep your knees and thighs parallel to each other.  (You can place a block on the lowest edge horizontally on the floor between the inner heels and ankles and press the outer ankles toward the inner ankles which will "grip" the block to help keep the knees safe and parallel.  You could also place the narrow edge of a block between the knees to help keep the legs parallel.)
Setu Bandha Pose

Step 3: Draw the upper shin bones toward your head so the knees remain over your heels.  Be sure to move the buttocks toward the backs of the knees.  Firm the shoulder blades against the back and feel as though they are moving away from the floor to draw the chest toward your chin.  Draw the chin slightly away from the floor rather than down and into the chest.

Step 4: You can keep the arms extended by your sides or you can clasp the hands beneath you and press the backs of the hands toward your heels.  With the arms extended, draw the upper arm bones up from the elbows into their shoulder sockets and feel the outer shoulders release more deeply toward the floor.

Step 5:
Stay in the pose 30 seconds or longer.  When you are ready to come out, unclasp the hands and release the pelvis slowly to the floor.  Rest and repeat as many times as you'd like!

Enjoy!!!
