MANTRA

"Want What You Have...Do What You Can...Be What You Are..."   ~traditional Irish Blessing.

 Happy Lady in green

If these words resonate with you, try repeating this mantra to yourself several times; several times a day all month.

Remember, the word "mantra" literally means "mind protector."

Repeating a mantra is the first step towards training the mind, allowing positive, beneficial thoughts to permeate your being and will, if practiced regularly, truly transform your experience of life!

Member Spotlight: Yvonne Forsythe

Yvonne Forsythe is truly an inspiration to all the Brightwater Community!!! I have known Yvonne for 8 years now, and she continues to amaze and inspire me weekly with her commitment and true zeal for yoga!Yvinne in Tree pose

During our first phone conversation, in response to a flyer for Brightwater Yoga she saw at Harris Teeter, I just knew we were immediately and deeply connected. She came in for a class the next evening - which turned out to be a private session -and she was hooked!

Since that class, she continues to attend 2 classes per week without exception. When I asked her what attracts her to this practice and keeps her coming back week after week, this is what she told me: "I look forward to the class as much today as I did when I first started! There's never been a Tuesday or Thursday that I've not wanted to go to class...I enjoy it so much and it's just part of my life now. I come away with something from every class."

Yoga to Yvonne is more than just a physical practice, it's a mental release. "I don't feel the "tightness" I used to feel, she explained. Yvonne is a registered dental hygienist at John Strickland's office here in Hendersonville. She used to get a lot of headaches due to the work she does and, since doing Yoga, no longer gets them. "I'm more aware of my posture at work and out of work," explained Yvonne. "It just feels good...I don't think people realize how good it can make you feel!"

Yvonne especially likes the fact that in a Yoga class there is no competition; not with other people and especially not with herself. She says some days are better than others, that's for sure, but that doesn't discourage her in the least. "If there's a pose I can't do yet I know there will be a day I can do it. And, if I don't it's no big deal because it's about the process, not a product."

I asked Yvonne what her favorite moments were over the past 8 years and she replied with a big smile, "every class is a favorite moment!!!"

How is Stress Affecting You?

I've noticed the #1 complaint that's affecting my clients these days is STRESS. It's no secret that our world is under a little more stress than usual. So what is all this stress really doing to your body?

Stressed ManUnfortunately our bodies nervous system doesn't always know the difference between a continuous worrisome thought or back in the day when we were being chased by lions. The body reacts by releasing certain stress hormones like adrenalin and cortisol. These hormones speed the heart rate, slow digestion, shunt blood flow to major muscle groups and raise blood pressure.

Five minutes of worry or pure anger can raise cortisol levels for at least six hours. When this happens chronically, without awareness or relief, we begin to see physical symptoms. The first symptoms are relatively mild, like chronic headaches, body aches and increased susceptibility to colds. With more exposure to Chronic Stress, however, more serious health problems may develop.

April's Awesome Asana

Come on...admit it...you're beginning to love this "powerful" pose!!!

Utkatasana, or "Chair Pose," comes from "utkana," which means powerful, or fierce. This pose offers a variety of benefits, including stretching the shoulders and chest and stimulating the heart, the diaphragm, and the abdominal organs. This stimulation builds heat in the body, making this warming pose an excellent choice for your winter practice.
Here's how to get into Chair Pose step by step:

Step 1: From Tadasana, inhale while raising your arms perpendicular to the floor. Utkatasana PoseYour arms can be parallel, with palms facing inward, or the palms joined together.

Step 2: Exhale,  bending your knees trying to keep your thighs as parallel to the floor as you can. Your front torso will lean slightly forward over the thighs in an approximate right angle, and your knees will slightly extend over your feet. Concentrate on keeping your inner thighs parallel and pressing down toward your heels.

Step 3: Keep the lower back strong, tailbone pressing toward the floor and shoulders firm, away from your ears.

Step 4: Hold Chair Pose for 30 seconds, if possible. To release the pose, inhale, lifting through the arms and straightening the knees. Lower your arms down to your side, returning to Tadasana.

       May we give
               to ourselves and
                              of ourselves...
                                       extending within
                                                              to without...
                                                                        and may we
                                                                               realize together
                                                                                           the profound
                                                                                                              gifts of
