JULY MANTRA

Om Gate,
gate,
paragate,
parasamgate,
bodhi svaha.

Gone, gone,
gone beyond,
gone altogether beyond,
I am awakened,
so it is.

Om Gate
This is a mantra of the heart...directly from the heart sutra...very special!

If these words resonate with you, try repeating this mantra to yourself several times; several times a day all month.

Remember, the word "mantra" literally means "mind protector."

Repeating a mantra is the first step towards training the mind, allowing positive, beneficial thoughts to permeate your being and will, if practiced regularly, truly transform your experience of life!

Member Spotlight:
Bonnie Arbuckle

On July 15th, Bonnie Arbuckle will celebrate her 80th birthday! I had the pleasure of chatting with Bonnie about her incredibly full and rich life and was warmed by her optimism and sincere enthusiasm for life. Bonnie attributes her optimism to growing up in a family where "people were positive and children were loved." Bonnie added that she's always been physically active and she just enjoys living every day to the hilt! Commenting on her 80th year anniversary, Bonnie says she doesn't feel old inside. "I don't think of people's age in terms of years, "Bonnie explained. She has always had friends of all ages including lots who are younger than she (in terms of years, that is).

Bonnie Arbuckle and Leigh Ann

Bonnie stays very physically active with Yoga as a primary source for fifteen years now. She was introduced to Yoga by Dr. Patricia Johnson in Robbinsville, NC. Bonnie had been living there since 1982 on 17 acres complete with greenhouse and huge gardens. Her house was even passive solar and with her gardens she and her husband were able to live, to a large extent, off their own land in a very environmentally conscious way. Dr. Johnson was also interested in holistic living and began teaching a Yoga class that Bonnie attended regularly. After moving to Hendersonville, Bonnie continued her Yoga classes at the YMCA until she met me and began coming to Brightwater Yoga 6 years ago. "These classes have really made me aware of how my body works and how to make it work better," Bonnie commented, "my body expects the Yoga every week." She practices every morning to her A.M. Yoga with Rodney Yee video as well as attending 1 to 2 classes a week at Brightwater. She says she really loves the Restorative Yoga Class on Friday mornings and it's ideal when she can attend that along with another active class during the week. "Yoga keeps me flexible not only in body, but in mind as well," said Bonnie with a grin.

Bonnie thinks the Yoga is very important health wise. She has recently had a lot of physical therapy for her back and the therapist commented to her that Yoga has been and will continue to be very beneficial to her life style. In fact, Bonnie mentioned that even her personal Physician recommends Yoga to her patients!

Bonnie's active life style is complimented with all the volunteer work she does for our community. We talked a lot about the passion she has for native plants (wildflowers) that she has felt since she was a Girl Scout. She works at the Native Woodland Garden at the Bullington Center as a volunteer once a week during the growing season. She is also a member of the Western Carolina Botanical Club where she has held numerous offices and participates in and sometimes leads hikes every Friday from late February-November. Bonnie has beautiful gardens at her own home comprised mostly of native plants.

In addition, Bonnie volunteers at the Friends of the Library Sorting books and helping with the book sales. She is also an active member at the Unitarian Universalists Fellowship of Hendersonville where she is currently serving on the Landscape Committee. She has served on their Faith Link Committee and is still a mentor for a family that she has been with for the past 5 years.

Another interest of Bonnie's is "living gently on the earth." She volunteers at ECO and has even put in a water catchment system at her home consisting of a 15,000 gallon above ground cistern. In her spare time, Bonnie loves to read and travel. She also collects ethnic textiles which she has displayed in her home from her travels to South America, Guatemala, Peru, etc.

I would personally like to wish Bonnie a wonderful Birthday year from all of us here at Brightwater Yoga! Bonnie is celebrating her 80th every day this year! I am so inspired by her spirit!!! May we all learn from her wonderful example!!!

July's Joyous Asana

Virabradrasana I
Warrior I

Step 1:  From Tadasana, step or jump your feet 4 to 4 ½ feet apart and extend your arms out to the sides stretching from the center of your chest out through your fingers.
Step 2:  Roll your shoulders back to turn the palms up and lift the arms over your head extending from the base of the ribs up through the tips of your fingers.

Virabradrasana 1Step 3:  Turn your left foot deeply inward and your right foot and leg 90 degrees to the right followed by your right hip, right side ribs, right side chest and right shoulder so your torso is facing your right foot.  The arms are still reaching overhead beside the ears.  Move your tailbone towards the floor and feel your back ribs lifting up towards your thumbs.

Step 4:  Bend your front knee bringing the knee directly over the ankle at a 90-degree angle.  As the right knee bends, stretch back strongly through the left leg keeping the left out heel firmly rooted.  Stretch the arms as much as you're stretching through your left leg so the energy exerted is even and balanced.  Continue to draw your tailbone down and back ribs up so as not to compress the low back.

Step 5:  Lengthen the back of the neck and keep the shoulders relaxing down away from the ears and look up towards your hands drawing the palms together as you maintain the strong stretch through the arms.  BREATHE and stay here for several breaths deepening the pose by increasing the lift of the chest, increasing the stretch of the rear leg and arms and softening in the front of the left hip to release the top of the thigh closer towards the floor.Virabradrasana 1

Step 6:  To come out, straighten your front leg and center your head between the arms again.  Separate your hands and turn your feet and legs to the front. Jump or step your feet together to Tadasana and lower your arms by your sides.

Step 7:  Repeat steps 1-6 turning your legs to the left so the left leg is in front.  Enjoy this strong and energizing pose!!  Consider repeating the pose on both sides deepening your experience and understanding with each conscious breath.
