June Mantra

Om Gum Ganapatayei Namaha

(Om Guhm Guh-nuh-puh-tah-yei Nah-mah-hah)

Salutations to the Lord of the Hosts within and without, who removes obstacles from our life.

Ganesha is often called the Lord of the Hosts.

This mantra can help resolve many problems and difficulties by bringing about unity between our desire and the object of that desire.

Chanting it can help to remove a barrier.

Ganesha

If these words resonate with you, try repeating this mantra to yourself several times; several times a day all month.

Remember, the word "mantra" literally means "mind protector."

Repeating a mantra is the first step towards training the mind, allowing positive, beneficial thoughts to permeate your being and will, if practiced regularly, truly transform your experience of life!

Member Spotlight

Tish Callen

I'd like to take the opportunity with this month's Member Spotlight to introduce you to Tish Callen, the newest member of our Brightwater family!  Tish is a massage therapist as well as a yoga and pilates instructor.  Presently, she is sharing Brook's space and is available by appointment for massage, but she is looking very forward to also offering
 Children's Yoga classes beginning Monday, June 14th! (See the Notice in the left column.)

"Having the opportunity to do massage here is a blessing," gleemed Tish.  "I feel very open and creative now that I'm here, and that makes a huge difference to what you're able to give to your work," she added.

Tish has been massaging for three years and prior to receiving her massage certification, she became a certified Yoga Instructor through the Asheville Yoga Center. It was on a vacation with Brooke, to Hilton Head Island, that she "got the fever" for yoga. She and Brooke went to a yoga class one day while there and it just so happened that she and Brooke were the only two in class. "Since it was just us," she said, "the instructor played around with different yoga styles and I was hooked immediately!"

She sought out classes when they returned home and found Asheville Yoga Center Tish Callen where she studied for a year before committing to a nine month teacher training with Stephanie Keach.  Tish says that she really did the training to immerse herself more deeply yoga with no real agenda.  She became certified to teach in 2005.

During this time, Tish, who was also certified to teach Pilates, was teaching public and private classes at The Core here in Hendersonville.  "Pilates was a great foundation for me to grow. It brought me the real awareness I needed in my body," she explained. She says she still incorporates pieces of that training in her practice today.

After teaching there for a while, Tish says her life took a different path and she made the decision to attend the Asheville School of Massage and Yoga. She received her massage certification in 2007. Soon after, she opened her own practice right here on Main Street where she offered massage and began teaching Yoga and Pilates again. "It was great!" Tish exclaimed. "I had worked so long to be able to do these things that I love and I was actually doing them all! And I was able to support myself while doing what I love and was actually able to witness the benefits and effects on my clients. I especially loved it when I worked with people for an extended period of time...it's nice to be a part of their transformation," she elaborated.

As it usually does, life took another course and Tish is now at Brightwater Yoga. "Life is your own journey," she said "and I am blessed to be on a similar path as Brooke." She shared with me that she feels it is Brooke who really made it possible for her to be here at Brightwater Yoga. "It's just so interesting where life takes you!"

Now that she's been here for a month and is feeling so comfortable and confident, Tish feels like she has more to give which is why she plans to offer the Children's Class. Tish is in a very loving relationship in which she shares two beautiful children; Harris (7) and Margot (4). It's because of her experience with them and the Brightwater environment that she's become inspired to begin these classes. "I never thought I'd want to teach kids yoga," she admitted.  "I remember studying it in school and thinking this is not for me! Being with Margot and Harris had made me realize that kids have such beautiful energy. They're really in the moment and because of that, their bodies are open. I wish I had learned yoga as a child, so now I would like to offer it to them."

Tish confided that she found yoga at a time in her life when she was a young woman struggling with all of life's challenges and how it truly helped her to accept and understand herself. "If we offer yoga classes for children, then maybe we can offer them the same opportunity or at least give them some tools to access during their life challenges too," we agreed. "For me, it's about yoga, massage and family and putting myself in a place like Brightwater Yoga where I can enjoy what I do and feel balanced in my life," she summarized.
 Tish Callen
It's due to that balance that she and her family recently adopted a new dog, Jenkins, who has surprisingly brought her so much happiness.  Another affirmation that when you come from a place of balance and openness, it's amazing what surprises life will bring your way! Tish says that she's really learned to listen to herself and to what she needs and it feels great! She's convinced that it's because she was listening that she's finally here at Brightwater! We're glad you listened, Tish!  Welcome to our Kula!

Tish is offering a new client special...a 60 minute massage for $50 or a 90 minute massage for $80. She also offers private Yoga and Pilates session by appointment. You can reach her at 699-5634.

June's Joyous Asana:

Salamba Sarvangasana
(Sah-LOM-bah Sar-van-GAHS-anna)
Salamba = with support
Sarva = all
Anga = limb
Supported Shoulderstand (at the wall)

Step 1: Fold 3 blankets into 2'x3' rectangles neatly. Place them on the front end of your sticky mat with the folded edges facing the end of the mat stacked very neatly. Fold the end of the sticky mat up to cover ½ of the blankets and place it about 3 to 6 inches away from a wall with the folded edges of the blankets facing away from the wall. (**You can use more or less blankets depending on the needs of your body - specifically your neck.)

Step 2: Lie on the blankets with your shoulders approximately 2 inches away from the edge of the blankets, the back of your head on the floor and your legs against the wall. Bend your arms and bring the inner elbows in close to your side ribs with your palms facing each other and the fingers pointing toward the ceiling.
Salamba Sarvangasana
Step 3: Press your outer shoulders and elbows down against the blankets and your heels against the wall and lift your hips up drawing them over the shoulders. Bring your toe tips to the wall level with your knees to and draw your tailbone toward the ceiling to help get the hips in line with your shoulders. All the while, relax your neck and draw your chin gently toward your chest. Walk your elbows in toward one another and bring your hands to your back walking them down toward your shoulder blades with the fingers pointing in toward your spine. (**This part of the pose feels similar to Bridge Pose except your feet are on the wall and your hands are resting on your back.)

Step 4: Once you feel secure with your foundation, straighten one leg extending the leg up toward the ceiling directly in line with the hip (NOT OVER THE HEAD!). Continue to extend up through that leg and straighten the other leg up beside it. Hug the legs into the midline of the body and continue drawing them up toward the ceiling as you compact the hips and lift them up away from the ribs. Press the elbows firmly down into the blankets drawing the inner elbows toward each other. Maintaining those actions, draw the upper arms bones up from the elbows into their shoulder sockets which will ground the upper arms and outer shoulders more onto the blankets and allow the shoulder blades to press in toward the chest and draw the chest toward the chin. Relax your throat and neck. The weight in this pose is between the elbows and the shoulders...NOT ON THE NECK!

Step 5:
Stay as long as you like allowing your eyes to soften and your gaze to remain on your heart center. Remember to hug into the midline of the body to maintain steadiness. When you are ready to come out of the pose, bend your knees and bring your toe tips back to the wall, release your hands from your back and bring your hips to the floor. Pause and feel. Then roll to your side and press down with your hands to sit up. Pause and feel again. Enjoy all the sensations that come from this calming inversion!!!

***REMEMBER NEVER TO TURN YOUR HEAD WHILE IN THE POSE.  If you want to look to the side just shift your eyes or wait to see whatever it is until you have come completely out of the pose!!!***

Enjoy!!!
