Forward To A Friend

Is It Wine?????
 spacer
This is the number one question I get asked these days...at least, that is, since the MonaVie station has been at the studio.  No, it is not wine...it is MonaVie, the most nutritious juice (or tonic as I like to call it) that you can put in your body, in my opinion.

Monavie bottles

It is at Brightwater Yoga for you to try...to drink before and/or after class each time you come...if you are interested.

Mark, my husband, and I began drinking MonaVie a little over 2 months ago and I am so glad we did.  The results have been amazing.  We both feel better than we have ever felt and have amazing energy and drive, yet we both sleep better than we did before we started drinking it.

Mark started drinking it basically because I was,  and in such a short amount of time his whole life has changed.  He began feeling better and began to see more clearly what he really wanted his reality to be like and he had the energy and attitude to make it happen.  Was it because of MonaVie?

We believe it was because of the effect this wonderful tonic had on him and his body that motivated him to act, and allowed him to receive.
It's because I love this juice so much that it is at the studio for all of you to taste and explore at your leisure.

I didn't begin drinking MonaVie with expectations, I began drinking it because, after two years of hearing stories from people who were drinking it, that my heart guided me to try it and I am so glad I did.  It, like Yoga, has woven itself into the fabric of my being.

So, I assure you, we are not obligating you to anything at all...this is just an opportunity.  My goal is to facilitate good health in this studio and in this community and I believe MonaVie is a wonderful compliment to my Yoga practice and may be to yours as well!
To your health!!

Cheers,
Leigh Ann

MAY
MANTRA

"Breathing in,
I calm my body.
Breathing out,
I smile.
Dwelling in the
present moment
I know this is a wonderful  moment."

- Thich Nhat Hanh

If these words resonate with you, try repeating this mantra to yourself several times; several times a day all month.

Remember, the word "mantra" literally means "mind protector."

Repeating a mantra is the first step towards training the mind, allowing positive, beneficial thoughts to permeate your being and will, if practiced regularly, truly transform your experience of life!

Restorative Yoga...
What is it, really???
Every Friday morning at 9:30 am at Brightwater Yoga students are finding the answer to that question within themselves.  Lately, interestingly enough, the class has grown in numbers and students are sharing with me how amazing they feel all day after the class and at times that feeling lasts for days at a time. Why do they feel so good? Why is the class growing in popularity?

The answer is simply because this class gives us permission to let down our guard and actually relax in a structured environment under the guise of watchful, caring and empathetic eyes. Basically, we just don't know how to relax. The fact is relaxation is a process that just has to happen. It cannot be forced or even anticipated. Restorative Yoga

In a typical Restorative Class at Brightwater, there will be lots of props scattered all over the floor by each student. The teacher will demonstrate a pose and then guide the students as to how to set up for the pose and, once in the pose, the students will hold that pose...sometimes for 5 minutes and sometimes for up to 45 minutes. What is important to understand though is that this class (for the most part) is completely passive - meaning that there is no muscular engagement necessary to hold the pose.

Instead, the props "hold" the pose and the student is asked to let go and "fall" into the posture. At first, this may be more difficult than you might think which is why postures are often "held" for long periods of time. There is this amazing state of being somewhere between sleep and still being awake, with clarity and totally relaxed. That is the place this class is attempting to introduce you to and allow you to exist within.

I often describe this class as being very subtle. It's often the subtleties in life that we either overlook or are the hardest to access.  That's why this class is unlike any other class at Brightwater Yoga...not even Gentle Yoga and, at the same time, it is a wonderful compliment to all of them. This class targets calming the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems in an effort to restore energy by creating a sense of true calm and quiet that can ultimately be accessed even when not in class. There's a strong emphasis on observance of breath - which I should clarify that is very different from breath work or Pranayama.  You are encouraged to simply observe your breathing while in the poses in an effort to give the mind somewhere to "rest" so that it doesn't take over.

Come in and give one of these classes a try the next Friday morning you have some time...I feel sure you and your body will be so glad you did!!
Namaste.

Member Spotlight: Arlene Russell

Arlene Russel with Paintings

"I like the emphasis on doing what I can, listening to my body and trusting my own body,"  Arlene Russell expressed to me after class one Monday morning.  She continued to explain to me that in a class, with the encouragement and presence of a teacher as well as the others around her, she can last longer.  "Otherwise," Arlene admitted, "I would just move out of a pose when it got hard."

After showing up for the Friday morning flow class that no one else ended up coming to I asked Arlene what she would like to work on that day.  That turned out to be a pivotal practice for Arlene.  She explained that she felt like her hamstrings might just be holding back her dog pose, so, that's what we targeted with Supta Padangusthasana.  I showed Arlene some very distinct ways to practice the pose and she continues to practice it every day at home.  "It's become foundational for me which I believe helps the health of my back," Arlene discovered.  Meanwhile her dog pose has deepened and she, unexpectedly, now has a home practice.

When I asked her how this has changed her Yoga experience, she mentioned that when she misses a day she doesn't feel as good, as healthy, or as strong.  "I've gone from not having a home practice to doing Supta Padangusthasana every day...and that's BIG!!!"  Arlene expressed.  She not only wants to do it every day, but she has to do it every day because her body needs it.

Arlene Ruseel painting"I love being active," says Arlene.  Her mind and spirit are really involved in learning, facilitating and teaching Non-Violent Communication.  She continues to marvel at how interconnected all of her passions are to each other.  She loves reading about yoga wisdom and finds that directly reflected in the teachings of NVC.  "Non-Violent Communication is a practical way of being in the world in truth and honesty," she went on to explain.  "It is so important to me to find and stay balanced in body, mind and spirit.   Just like in a yoga practice, we are never in perfect alignment; we are always moving in and out of it, finding where it is, because it always changes.  Ultimately," she says, "these practices are what  keep  me grounded in my spiritual nature."
In addition to practicing yoga and NVC, Arlene has many other talents and interests.  She loves to hike, walk dogs, pet sit and create beautiful art.  She has a house/pet sitting business and finds that most of her clients are "yoga people."  If you are someone in need of either of these services, please call her at 692-4833!

I would personally like to mention that Arlene is the one who keeps our studio and space looking so beautiful and organized.  I am so grateful to her for putting forth such a compassionate effort.  When I told her that, she said "I just love being in this space and adding a piece of myself to the atmosphere at Brightwater.  It's a homing and centering space for me...it's our yoga "temple!"  Thanks Arlene for making this "temple" so special with your wonderful presence!

Meet Diana Osteen,
Skincare Specialist

I am an artist/esthetician with a passion for natural skin care & makeup artistry, healthy living, and a love of our beautiful earth! My approach to skin care treatments Diana Osteenbegins with humans' biggest resource, the earth. The earth naturally gives us what our bodies need, internally and externally, that simple. So why use products that add dyes, parabens, unnatural preservatives and fragrances that don't even help your skin but harms it??? Our earth gives us all the skin care products we need! Clay, oats, honey, sea salt, or essential oils like lavender & neroli are great for the skin & body.

My facial and body treatments use products that are certified organic, free of synthetic chemicals & preservatives and they use only what is necessary to heal, nourish, firm and protect the skin without disrupting the natural ph balance. So simple, yet effective! I enjoy what I do because I know my client leave my treatment room feeling relaxed, refreshed, and confident in their choice of skin care! The future for skin & body care has been around since the earth was born. "Ye are the salt of the earth..." I hope to enlighten and show others this simple truth.

May's Marvelous Asana

Supta Padangusthasna
(soup-TAH pad-ang-goosh-TAHS-ahna)

Supta = reclined, lying down             Pada = foot                  Angusta = big toe

Step 1:
Begin lying on your back with your legs together and strongly extended on the floor and your arms extended by your sides.  If your head doesn't reach the floor easily, place a folded blanket underneath it.   Bend your right knee and draw it towards your chest .  With your hands, draw the thigh towards your abdomen.  Meanwhile, continue extending down through the left leg and press your left thigh towards the floor.
 Supta Padangusthasana I pose
Step 2:   Supta Padangusthasana I:   Loop a strap around the ball mount of the right foot and, holding the strap with both hands, straighten the leg completely.  (That may mean lowering the leg a little so it's at less than a 90 degree angle from the floor...)Pressing the right foot into the strap, walk the hands up the strap towards the right foot so the arms are fully extended and relax your shoulders towards the floor.  Broaden your shoulder blades against the floor and the collarbones away from your sternum to lift and broaden your chest.  Feel your pelvis even and heavy against the floor and continue to press strongly through the both heels - legs straight!  Press the top, front of your right thigh towards the back of your right leg to open the right hamstring.  Stay here as long as you'd like and breathe deeply.
Supta Padangusthasana II pose
Step 3:
Supta Padangusthasana II:  Take hold of both straps with the right hand and extend the left arm out to the left, in line with the shoulder, against the floor.  Slowly take the right leg diagonally out to the right keeping your left hip against the floor.  (It helps to REALLY stretch down through the left leg and roll your abdomen to the left...)  You're not trying to get the right leg to the floor, you're drawing the right toes up so they are more in line with the right shoulder while keeping your right buttock and hip moving down and in towards your left inner thigh.  Stay here as long as you'd like and breathe deeply.

Step 4:
Keeping it straight, bring your right leg back to the center and lower it slowly to the floor extending strongly through the leg as you lower it down.

Step 5:
  Repeat on the left.  Enjoy!!!

May we give
